Thinking about a career in financial advisory?

I'm expanding my team at Prudential. If you're weighing a move into financial advisory, here's an honest look at what the work is, what it pays, and what it takes to get licensed.

The role

What does a financial consultant do?

A Financial Consultant, also called a Financial Advisor, supports individuals and businesses with financial planning, protection and wealth strategies, helping clients make informed decisions and reach their goals with confidence.

Work-life balance

You control your own schedule. Whether that means fitness, family time, or personal projects, the role is built around planning your own routine, not clocking in.

No salary ceiling

Income is based on effort and performance, with no fixed cap. New consultants also receive a base salary for the first two years, plus performance bonuses and incentive trips.

Client interaction

Much of the role is meeting clients, understanding their goals, and learning about their financial needs, which means strong communication and relationship-building matter more than a finance degree.

Continuous learning

The industry keeps evolving. Consultants keep learning about new products, regulations and market conditions, building genuine expertise over time, not just a sales script.

Getting licensed

Becoming a financial consultant in Singapore

Financial advisory is a regulated profession here. If you're exploring this path, understanding the licensing process up front will help you plan your next steps.

Entry requirements

  • A full GCE 'A' Level certificate, International Baccalaureate Diploma, a polytechnic diploma, or an equivalent qualification
  • A minimum age of 21
  • The professional and ethical standing MAS expects of the role

Licensing runs through MAS-set examinations, including RES 5: Rules, Ethics and Skills for Financial Advisory, before you can start advising clients. If you're unsure whether you qualify, you're welcome to discuss your background with me directly, requirements do get updated by MAS from time to time.
