Why bother
Why a financial health check is worth the ten minutes
Money habits are easy to put off checking, especially when things feel fine day to day. A 2025 nationwide sentiment survey found real cracks appearing in how prepared people in Singapore actually are.
The share of working adults investing at least 10% of their take-home pay fell from 59% to 47% in a single year. More than a third have not done any legacy planning at all, the highest proportion of any market surveyed in the region. Confidence about retirement dropped too: only 58% of respondents here say they have a clear idea of how much they'll actually need, the lowest figure among the markets studied. None of this means anyone is doing badly on purpose. It usually just means nobody has sat down and actually checked. That's what this tool is for.
The benchmarks used in this check aren't invented for this page. They come from the Monetary Authority of Singapore's Basic Financial Planning Guide, published together with the Association of Banks in Singapore, the Association of Financial Advisers and the Life Insurance Association: at least 3 to 6 months of expenses set aside as an emergency fund, death and total permanent disability cover of at least 9 times annual income, critical illness cover of at least 4 times annual income, no more than 15% of income spent on insurance premiums, and at least 10% of take-home pay invested for retirement and other goals. This check adds two areas most guides leave out: how your monthly cash flow actually holds up, and how far along your legacy planning really is.
1. Emergency fund
How many months of regular expenses you could cover from cash on hand, against the standard 3-6 month guideline.
2. Protection
Your death, TPD and critical illness cover relative to income, and whether your premiums are stretching your budget.
3. Investing
What share of your take-home pay is actually going toward long-term goals, not just sitting in a savings account.
4. Retirement readiness
Whether you have an actual plan and target, or you're mostly relying on CPF and hoping it works out.
5. Debt & cash flow
How much room is left each month after expenses, debt repayments and investing, and whether that's shrinking.
6. Legacy planning
Whether the essentials, a will, CPF nomination, LPA and other nominations, are actually in place.
Your financial snapshot
Approximate figures are fine. This is an educational first-pass check, not a full financial plan.
This calculator uses simplified educational benchmarks. A financial adviser should verify your actual needs, policy terms, CPF position, liabilities and objectives before any recommendations are made.
Common questions
Before you start
Is this financial advice?
No. This is a general educational tool that scores your figures against simplified public benchmarks. It does not take into account your full circumstances and is not a recommendation to buy or sell any product. A proper review does that.
How is my score calculated?
Across six areas: emergency fund, protection (death, TPD and critical illness cover), investing rate, retirement readiness, debt and cash flow, and legacy planning. Each is weighted and added up to a score out of 100, based on the benchmarks in MAS's Basic Financial Planning Guide, plus two areas most guides leave out.
What happens to the information I enter?
The calculator runs in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you choose to submit your name and contact details at the end to get your PDF and, optionally, a follow-up.
How long does this take?
About two minutes. Approximate figures are fine, this is meant to be a quick first-pass check, not a full fact-find.
I got a low score. What now?
That's a normal starting point for a lot of people, and exactly what a free consultation is for. Bring your results and we'll work through the gaps in priority order.
Please note
What this check is, and isn't
